GOODE

Thursday Afternoon

Goode stares at the sympathy card, reading the names of the other officers until his eyes lose focus. What is he supposed to write? Deepest condolences? Keeping you in my prayers? In the end, he scrawls his signature, Francis X. Goode, and hands the card back to the rookie who’s making the rounds with it. He doesn’t even look at her. He doesn’t want her to see the emotion in his eyes. Only after she walks away does he realize Francis X. Goode was too cold. What’s wrong with him? He should’ve put Frank.

Even Love, Frank.

Fuck.

He shakes his head, going back to work. Work is the only thing that helps him forget the people involved in this case. Butler, Fiona, their daughters. It’s not the first time he’s lost a friend on duty. It won’t be the last. Over the years, he’s tried everything to get his mind off that part of the job. Boxing. Kickboxing. Meditation, briefly. Yoga, even more briefly (Dawes dragged him to a class). Karate. Running. Pumping. Squash. Booze. The only thing that works for him is to stop trying to forget. Because it never happens. So instead, he works.

He listens to Butler’s voice on the field tapes. Follows up his scant leads. Takes phone calls from the task force, his captain, and Internal Affairs. He tracks Ogilvy’s recent Visa purchases. Compares notes with Dawes. He hears himself make bad jokes trying to get her to laugh. Or maybe to make himself laugh. Sometimes it works, but not often. The whole time, he tries not to smash his desk, the computer, and the entire squad room. He doesn’t want to admit it, but it’s Butler’s laugh he wants to hear.
